25 jaar Aprilia Moto 6.5

25 years Aprilia Moto 6.5

Engine, wheels, tank and saddle - with the Aprilla Moto 6.5 the French top designer Philippe Starck wanted to reduce the motorcycle to its essence a quarter of a century ago.  Unfortunately it was not a huge success, but nowadays a 6.5 is a well-known collector's item.  La Passione - passion.  Italy cannot do without.  And certainly not in the eighties and nineties, when they were preparing to conquer the international motorcycle market south of the Alps.  Aprilia against Cagiva, both against Ducati and all three against Japan.  Whether that was reflected in the sales figures or on the tracks, it didn't matter, in these wild times there was an infectious creative anarchy.  Miguel Galluzzi had delivered the showpiece at the time with his Ducati Monster.  Rival Aprilia took a completely different path with the Moto 6.5.  It all started when Ivano Beggio, the 'padrone' of the ambitious Italian motorcycle manufacturer from the Venice region, overcame himself in the late 1980s.  Financial advisers had persuaded him to spread the huge profits he had made and invest in foreign furniture companies, sunglasses manufacturers and clothing companies.  That went - as so often - quite wrong.  Only thanks to two genius scooters (the Scarabeo and the SR50), which with their fresh design and new concepts hit the fast-growing Italian market like a bomb, Beggio managed to get his head out of the noose.  However, that didn't stop him from walking off the beaten track and his paths often crossed with VIPs.  Beggio got to know many famous people, including top designer Philippe Starck, who had just completed the renovation of the private rooms in the Elysée of French President Francois Mitterrand.  Beggio sensed the enormous opportunity to create something for eternity.  A design icon like the Fiat 500 or the Vespa - nothing less than that.  "I got to know Starck at a furniture exhibition," Beggio wrote in his biography. "He was extremely sympathetic, bursting with energy and had a great passion for motorcycles.  As a teenager he tinkered with the most diverse machines, and when I got to know him, he had a Bultaco trial bike, an old Triumph and a Harley in the garage.  He said he would like to work with Aprilia to make a motorcycle, which he described as 'spiritual.  Within a few weeks we agreed on that machine, the Moto.  The name Starck had chosen himself.  The bike had to be as fascinating as a Harley and have a design as timeless as that of the Scarabeo.  After a month he already showed me the first sketches," the Aprilia boss later recalled. And indeed, Starck's first designs showed something completely new: a compact machine with an egg-shaped tank and emphatically organic shapes, which the engine block through the  under the single-cylinder continuous frame tubes and the corresponding rear silencer and flat front silencer completely in the center. Objections of the development department about the manufacturability of the concept were rigorously brushed aside by Beggio. Starck was given a free hand. Alberto Capella, a young and inspired  designer, had to ensure that Starck's design was really copied one-to-one.The first design model still featured the 350cc single-cylinder from the Suzuki DR350, as the Moto had to be a simple and compact motorcycle.  flash for the city and for riders without too much experience, they were attracted by the extraordinary deaign.  However, due to the low rate of the Japanese yen at the time, prices at Suzuki exploded and the single-cylinder of the Aprilia Pegaso was designated as a replacement power source. This block was larger and also much stronger than the originally planned Suzuki block.  Starck, however, was unwilling to compromise on frame construction.  "Obviously he wasn't used to compromising and discussing things with the technicians, as usual. Any proposed change was labeled by Starck as blasphemy," recalled Beggio.  The Frenchman often visited the design department in Noale and, together with his collaborator Thierry Gauguin, kept a close eye on the progress of the project.  Capella thought those visits were mainly of a friendly nature, with Starck looking at the engine from different angles for hours.  During those visits he always brought prosecco and other delicacies for the design team.  The Moto was complex and the development department had to work with new techniques to implement the peculiar shapes.  For example, special punching machines were needed to shape the elliptically bent frame tubes.  The front silencer, which came to lie around the underside of the engine like a kind of toboggan, was also a difficult part.  In addition, the spherical radiator, the egg-shaped petrol tank without real engine ergonomics, the seat without pronounced comfort and the fact that there were hardly any fairings posed considerable challenges for the team.  Moreover, the whole had to be executed in a gray tone, which almost drove the technicians to despair, because, for example, the UV-resistant rubber hoses and brake lines also had to be found in exactly the same colour.  The engineers in the development department also had to have extraordinary skills to assemble the extremely compact prototype.  In the end it was Capella, who negotiated with the necessary diplomacy between Starck on the one hand and the technicians on the other in order to reach the necessary small compromises, so that the rideability of the 'Starck' - as the 6.5 was called internally - at an acceptable level came.  In doing so, the development process of approximately two years was shortened by six months and the 6.5 could be presented at the 1994 Bologna Motor Show.  “Starck was also very involved in the presentation of the machine in Bologna,” Beggio said in his biography.  Before the unveiling, he put on a spectacular show and celebrities such as Peter Gabriel, Lucio Dalla and Bigas Luna posed with the Moto 6.5.  “In the first days after the presentation, we were overwhelmed by the number of orders from around the world and became convinced that we had created a timeless design icon. But after all the architects, designers and big entrepreneurs ordered one, the interest leveled off.  much to our surprise, the 'normal' rider did not appreciate the extroverted design and opted for Miguel Galluzzi's muscular Ducati Monster," said Beggio in his biography.  Ergo, the Moto 6.5 became the biggest flop in company history and after two years and about 6,200 machines produced, production was discontinued.  Beggio consoled himself with the fact that the Moto 6.5 as a collector's item kept increasing in value and the Aprilia even got a place in the motorcycle exhibition of the Guggenheim Museum in New York.  Meanwhile, the Moto 6.5 has become a real cult motorcycle in Italy.  After the Moto 6.5, despite all the difficulties, two more never realized projects followed in Noale in collaboration with Philippe Starck.  The first was the 'Lama' scooter, the second the X Ray 1000 with the V-twin of the later Aprilia RSV1000.  A design study and a running prototype of the X Ray 1000 were built.  However, technical problems related to the undersized tubular frame, the much too small fuel tank and too little space for the airbox came to light, as a result of which the project - partly due to the disappointing sales of the Moto 6.5 - was soon discontinued.  Still, the Moto 6.5 was Beggio's favorite project and another big performance awaited.  On March 16, 2018, the suddenly deceased 'padrone' Ivano Beggio was escorted to his final resting place in his hometown of Noale by about thirty Moto 6.5s, just as this visionary would have wanted.
