ENGLISH VERSION:

Under the heading "Bankruptcy, breakdown and malfunctions"...
the introduction:

"Those who enter new territory must also
make sure no one follows him.”
Ten world-famous designers talk about their favourite flops -
and what they have learned from them.

Just published in the magazine of the "Süddeutsche"...
A late statement by Philippe Starck:

"I think I am fascinated by motorbikes. When I was 14, I was given a moped called Vélosolex, after which I rode a Motobécane Mobylette, after all, a real motorbike. But always very simple, light machines. When Aprilia asked me to design a motorbike in the early nineties, I was very proud and excited.  My vision: two wheels, one bike, one tank, one saddle - a legendary naked bike without a fairing. Unfortunately, my machine was completely against the market trend.  At the time, every bike had to be suitable for off-road use and well-trained; the Paris-Dakar rally was the big example theme. I couldn't do anything with it, I didn't know the road.  My 6.5 was made by the brand Aprilia. And the Aprilia marketeers hardly advertised. It flashed terribly, the trade press and buyers rejected it. I was accused of making a motorbike for girls, not for men. Or at most for gay men. That was how reactionary the scene was then.
Nowadays it is considered a cult machine, for which enthusiasts pay three times the original price. I have six 65s and I still ride them. There are even MOTO' 6.5 motorbike clubs. What have I learned from it? Sometimes you just do the right thing at the wrong time. My client wasn't behind me, if you design against the trend, you've got the wind in your back".
The 71-year-old Frenchman is one of the most influential designers of his generation.  Objects such as his lemon press Juicy Salife or his plexiglass for Kartell are considered design icons.

NEDERLANDSE VERSIE

Tien wereldberoemde ontwerpers praten over hun favoriete flops...
